新潟県の村上駅から山形県の鼠ヶ関駅まで、45㎞をほぼ国道8号線を北上します。山が海まで迫り、ほとんど平地がなく、大きな集落は越後寒川駅、勝木駅、府屋駅くらいしかありません。ほとんど平地のないところに、国道8号線と羽越本線が並行して走り、民家すらないような場所が続きます。途中、道の駅笹川流れがあり、そこから景勝地である笹川流れを通ります。海と断崖絶壁が続く、景勝地です。景色のいい場所を走り続けると鼠ヶ関エリアにつきます。鼠ヶ関は山形県ですが、集落の3分の1くらいは新潟県で、なんでこんなところに県境があるのか不思議な場所です。鼠ヶ関は大きな集落で、マリーナがあるなどちょっと違った雰囲気です。帰りは、鼠ヶ関駅から新潟方面へ電車で戻りました。村上駅から鼠ヶ関駅までの間は電車の本数が昼間は特に少ないのでご注意を。風の影響とかを考えて、村上駅から北進するのか、鼠ヶ関駅から南進するのか選んだ方がよさそうです。
From Murakami Station in Niigata Prefecture to Nezumigaseki Station in Yamagata Prefecture, we head north on National Route 8 for 45 km. The mountains are close to the sea, there is almost no flat land, and the only large settlements are Echigo Samukawa Station, Katsuki Station, and Fuya Station. National Route 8 and the Uetsu Main Line run parallel to each other in an area with almost no flat land, and there are many places where there are no houses. On the way, there is a road station called Sasagawa Nagare, and from there we pass the scenic Sasagawa Nagare. It is a scenic spot where the sea and cliffs continue. If you continue driving through a scenic place, you will reach the Nezumigaseki area. Nezumigaseki is in Yamagata Prefecture, but about one-third of the settlement is in Niigata Prefecture, and it is a strange place to find a prefectural border in such a place. Nezumigaseki is a large settlement, and has a slightly different atmosphere with a marina. On the way back, we took a train from Nezumigaseki Station to Niigata. Please note that there are few trains between Murakami Station and Nezumigaseki Station, especially during the daytime. Taking into consideration the effects of wind, it would be best to choose whether to head north from Murakami Station or south from Nezumigaseki Station.
