野岩鉄道といわれても、どこ走っているのという人は多いと思います。東武鉄道の鬼怒川線、新藤原駅から先、会津高原尾瀬口駅までが野岩鉄道になります。下野の国と岩城の国をまたぐので野岩鉄道です。
沿線の人口密度は低く、経営できるのかという感じですが、1時間に1本程度はでんしゃがあり、ローカル線の割に利便性は高いです。龍王峡などの自然景観、湯西川温泉をはじめとする温泉、尾瀬の起点となる会津高原尾瀬口駅（現在は田島駅が起点になったようです）など、観光需要が比較的あるのと、奥会津から東京方面に向かう公共交通としての役割があるのでしょう。
野岩鉄道の売り上げに貢献したいところですが、東武鉄道の鬼怒川温泉駅で降り、ほぼ国道121号線沿いに走ります。国道121号線以外に走る道がないので、ひたすら北上する感じになります。鬼怒川温泉で補給をしておかないと、田島までコンビニすら見つからないので、ご注意を。
鬼怒川温泉を出て、龍王峡を少し散策をし、川治ダムルートを経由して、道の駅湯西川へ。上三依水生植物園を見学した後、男鹿高原を抜けて会津田島に出ました。
距離は約65㎞、獲得標高は1050mと出ました。観光した時間を含めた所要時間は合計6時間30分です。
Many people may not know where the Nogan Railway is located. The Nogan Railway is located on the Tobu Railway's Kinugawa Line from Shin-Fujiwara Station to Aizu-Kogen-Ozeguchi Station. It is called Nogan Railway because it crosses the Shimotsuke and Iwaki Provinces.
The population density along the line is low, and it seems like it could be managed, but there is a train about once an hour, and it is very convenient for a local line. There is a relatively high demand for tourism due to natural scenery such as Ryuokyo, hot springs such as Yunishigawa Onsen, and Aizu-Kogen-Ozeguchi Station, which is the starting point of Oze (Tajima Station seems to have become the starting point now), and it also serves as a public transportation service heading from Oku-Aizu to Tokyo.
I would like to contribute to the sales of the Nogan Railway, but I get off at Kinugawa Onsen Station on the Tobu Railway and ride along National Route 121. There is no other road to run on than National Route 121, so it feels like I'm just heading north. Be careful, if you don't stock up at Kinugawa Onsen, you won't even find a convenience store until you reach Tajima.
Leaving Kinugawa Onsen, we took a short stroll around Ryuokyo Gorge, then took the Kawaji Dam route to the Yunishigawa Roadside Station. After visiting the Kamimiyori Aquatic Botanical Garden, we passed through the Oga Plateau and arrived at Aizu-Tajima.
The distance was about 65km, with an elevation gain of 1,050m. The total travel time, including sightseeing, was 6 hours and 30 minutes.
鬼怒川温泉の駅は、観光客向けに改装されており、多くの人でにぎわっていります。私が到着したときはSLの大樹が方向転換をするということで、多くの見物人がいました。
The Kinugawa Onsen station has been renovated for tourists and is bustling with people. When I arrived, the SL Taiju was changing direction, so there were many spectators.
鬼怒川温泉から龍王峡までは軽い登りが続く感じですが、せいぜい2～3％くらいの勾配という感じで、それほど苦にはなりません。紅葉の名所の龍王峡は春はそれほど人は多くはありませんでした。
From Kinugawa Onsen to Ryuokyo, there is a slight climb, but it is only about 2-3% gradient, so it is not too difficult. Ryuokyo, a famous spot for autumn leaves, was not very crowded in spring.
龍王峡を越えると、国道121号線沿いに進み川治温泉郷・五十里ダムルートを通るか、軽くヒルクライムをして川治ダムを越えるルートがありますが、後者を選択しました。結構上るので、ちょっと後悔です。川治ダム、五十里ダムエリアを越えると道の駅湯西川への分岐が出てくるので、1㎞ほどロスしますが、休憩がてら立ち寄りました。ちなみに、湯西川温泉駅と道の駅湯西川は隣接しております。
After passing Ryuokyo Gorge, you can continue along Route 121 and take the Kawaji Onsenkyo/Isori Dam route, or do a little hill climbing and go over Kawaji Dam. I chose the latter. It's quite a climb, so I kind of regret it. After passing Kawaji Dam and Isori Dam areas, there is a fork in the road to Yunishigawa Roadside Station, so although it's a 1km loss, I stopped there for a break. By the way, Yunishigawa Onsen Station and Yunishigawa Roadside Station are adjacent to each other.
ダムエリアを越えると、南会津町の田島エリアまで、ひなびた温泉が点在するだけだったので、水生植物園がオープンした手だったので寄ってみました。そして、男鹿高原を抜けて、福島県に入ります。ちなみに、男鹿高原駅は秘境駅としても有名です。
Once you pass the dam area, there are only a few secluded hot springs scattered around until you reach the Tajima area of Minamiaizu Town, so I decided to stop by the newly opened aquatic botanical garden. Then, you pass through the Oga Plateau and enter Fukushima Prefecture. By the way, Oga Plateau Station is also famous as a remote station.
田島エリアに入ると、コンビニとかスーパーとかがあり、南会津エリアの中心地であるということが感じられました。宿もあるので、田島で1泊をし翌日会津鉄道沿いを、若松方面へ向かいました。
When I entered the Tajima area, I could see convenience stores and supermarkets, and felt that it was the center of the Minamiaizu area. There was also a lodging, so I stayed in Tajima for one night and headed towards Wakamatsu along the Aizu Railway the next day.
