I started from Sekine Station on the Ou Main Line. The fare would increase if I went all the way to Yonezawa Station, so I got off at Sekine Station, a common practice for people who pack their bikes. I stopped by Naoe Tsutsumi Park, where I was intrigued by the rather shady Totoro tree, and then headed to Onogawa Onsen on the west side of the city. Returning to the city center, I took in the classic spots like the Yonezawa Castle ruins and Uesugi Shrine. Having already ridden between Koriyama and Nihonmatsu in the morning, this was a 45km half-day route starting in the afternoon.

We start from Sekine Station, at the southern end of the city. You might think that the route will climb in one direction from Fukushima Station to Yonezawa Station, but the elevation drops from Toge Station. It's truly a basin. Therefore, as we move away from Yonezawa city, the route tends to be more of an uphill climb. Around the Totoro tree, there are significantly fewer houses, so it wouldn't be surprising if you came across a bear or something.
We stopped off at Onogawa Onsen, located west of Yonezawa City. The town is relatively large, and the main temple of Koshi Daikokuten (Hojuin) was impressive.
We returned to the city and our time was up at Uesugi Park and the ruins of Yonezawa Castle.
