We started in Iga City, the hometown of the Iga ninja. After touring the castle town and Iga Ueno Castle, we headed west on National Route 163 toward Kasagi Town. Our first hill climb was to Kasagi Temple. It was a 1.6 km climb with a 200m elevation difference, but we couldn't finish it due to the steep slope. On average, it probably exceeded 10%. Kasagi Temple was truly a temple for ascetics. We returned the way we came and headed to Wazuka Town. It's a small mountain town famous for its Uji tea production and its tea plantation scenery. After descending the slope, the 250m climb back up was quite challenging. We entered Kizugawa City, visited Gansenji Temple and Joruriji Temple, and then took the train from Kamo Station. Over the 60 km journey, we gained over 900m in elevation.

First, Iga City. I took the Kintetsu Railway and changed to the Iga Line at Tsuge Station to get to Iga-Ueno Station. While it's common to start from Tsuge, it's also important to take a local train. This time, I only explored the townscape a bit and visited Iga-Ueno Castle.

I headed west on National Route 163 toward Kasagi Town. National Route 25, also known as the Meihan National Highway, is more popular towards Osaka, so there was less traffic. However, the road was a bit steep, as it was slightly uphill. Once I entered Minamiyamashiro Village, I was on the Kansai Main Line, which gave me a sense of security. Now, I entered Kasagi Town and headed toward Kasagi Temple. I was a bit surprised to suddenly enter a mountain path from a residential area. I think Kasagidera can be called a mountain temple.

We descended to Kasagi Town and then headed north to Wazuka Town. Once again, the road was uphill. Wazuka Town's tea plantation landscape is a Japan Heritage Site. It's famous for producing Uji tea, and the police officers were impressive. However, I also wished I could see Mount Fuji.

After arriving in Kizugawa City, I had some time to visit Gansenji Temple and Joruriji Temple. They are ancient temples that are designated as important cultural properties and are protected by the National Health Insurance. I also felt that the scenery around Joruriji Temple was a place where you could get a feel for old Japan.
