群馬県草津町は標高1000mを越えるところにある、日本で最も標高の高いところにある町です。夏でも、30度になることは少なく、涼しいので真夏のサイクリングができます。また、草津温泉として全国的にも有名な街です。自転車乗りにとっては国道最高点である渋峠のある町でもあり。よく知られております。今回は、長野原草津口駅をスタートし、重要伝統的建造物群に指定されている、赤岩集落を経て、かつて走っていた吾妻線太子支線の太子駅により、そこから草津温泉へアタックします。帰りは、長野原草津口を飛ばして、八ッ場ダムにより、川原湯温泉駅からの帰りです。
高低差はおよそ600m、走行時間は2時間30分でした。
Kusatsu Town in Gunma Prefecture is located at an altitude of over 1000m, making it the highest town in Japan. Even in summer, it rarely gets below 30 degrees, so you can enjoy cycling in the middle of summer. The town is also famous nationwide as Kusatsu Onsen. For cyclists, this town is also home to Shibu Pass, the highest point on the national highway. It is well known. This time, we will start from Naganohara Kusatsuguchi Station, pass through the Akaiwa village, which has been designated as a group of important traditional buildings, and then arrive at Taishi Station on the Azuma Line Taishi Branch Line, which used to run there, and from there we will attack Kusatsu Onsen. On the way back, skip the Naganohara Kusatsu exit and return from Kawaraya Onsen Station via Yamba Dam.
The difference in elevation was approximately 600m, and the running time was 2 hours and 30 minutes.
長野原草津口駅から国道292号線を野反湖方面に走ります。緩やかに上ること5㎞強で泡岩の集落にたどり着きます。養蚕農家の町並みが残っているそうです。
From Naganohara Kusatsuguchi Station, take National Route 292 towards Lake Nozori. After a gentle climb of just over 5km, you will reach the village of Awaiwa. It seems that the townscape of sericulture farmers still remains.
赤岩集落から約2㎞で旧太子駅です。当時の状態が静態保存されております。
Old Oshi Station is about 2 km from Akaiwa village. The state at that time has been statically preserved.
旧太子駅を過ぎると、登りがどんどんきつくなってきます。草津方面に向かう手前に道の駅くにがあるので休憩することをお勧めします。道の駅くにを経て、草津方面に向かうと本格的な登りですが、登り区間は5，6㎞なので、1時間もかからず登れると思います。結構早く草津温泉につきます。
Once you pass Old Taishi Station, the climb becomes increasingly steep. There is a roadside station called Kuni just before heading towards Kusatsu, so we recommend taking a break. If you head towards Kusatsu after passing through the roadside station Kuni, you'll start to climb the mountain in earnest, but the climbing section is 5 or 6 km long, so I think it will take less than an hour to climb. We arrived at Kusatsu Onsen fairly early.
草津温泉から、長野原草津駅まで下り、さらに道の駅八ッ場ふるさと館に向かいます。八ッ場ダムがよく見えます。道の駅から2㎞弱で川原湯温泉駅になります。八ッ場ダムの建設に伴い、路線及び駅舎が移動し、かなりきれいな駅でした。
From Kusatsu Onsen, go down to Naganohara Kusatsu Station and then continue on to Michi-no-Eki Yamba Furusato-kan. Yamba Dam can be clearly seen. Kawaraya Onsen Station is less than 2 km from the roadside station. Due to the construction of Yamba Dam, the line and station building were moved, and the station is now quite clean.
